They’re in our myths. They’re on our screens. They’re even on some countries’ flags. Everybody loves a dragon. From fearsome fire-breathers to wyrms and water-dwellers, here’s a handy flowchart to decode the many draconic beasts you might find in your favorite fantasy media.
These definitions are based on traditional European heraldry and other references. Interestingly, many depictions of “dragons” in popular high fantasy media might technically be called wyverns (two wings and two legs). This looks more natural to viewers accustomed to the anatomy of birds and bats. But fans of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire might know that in the world of Westeros, dragons and wyverns are distinct species that both have two legs, though wyverns don’t breathe fire.
